President Mahinda Rajapaksa has informed the Election Commissioner to hold the North Provincial Council election.

Meanwhile Government sources stated that the North Western and Central Provincial Councils will be dissolved today.

The gazette notification in this regard has already been sent to the Government Press.

When our news team contacted the Governors of the two Provinces Tikiri Kobbakaduwa and Tissa Balalla, they said that they have signed the official documents in order to dissolve the Provincial Councils.

Election Commissioner Mahinda Deshapriya said earlier that elections for the 3 Provincial Councils will be held on September 21 or 28.

The Election Commissioner will release the gazette notification calling nominations within 7 days after dissolving the Provincial Councils.

Nominations should be called within 2 weeks after releasing this gazette notification, and the Election Department sources stated that the respective gazette will probably be sent to print early next week.

The terms of the North Western and the Central Provincial Councils will expire by the month of March next year.

However chief ministers of both Provincial Councils made a formal request from the respective governors on Wednesday to dissolve their Provincial Councils prematurely.
