Unions to meet with President tomorrow on bus fare amendment

Presidential Media Advisor Wijayananda Herath states that a special discussion would be held between President Mahinda Rajapaksa & representatives of bus associations.


The discussion according to Hearth will focus on revisions to bus fares.


Prior to announcement of revised bus fares the Ministry of Private Transport submitted the recommendations to the Ministry of Finance for its perusal.


Accordingly based on the guidance issued by the Ministry of Finance, The Ministry of Private Transport informed the National Transportation Commission to re-evaluate costing on bus fare revisions.


However the National revision to bus fares is done on the 1st of July on an annual basis.


Against this backdrop bus associations are demanding a 10% increase on existing bus fares.


Secretary of the All Island Private Bus Owners Associations Federation Anjana Priyanjith states that despite the existing circumstances he would participate in tomorrows meeting with President Mahinda Rajapaksa.




The Lanka Private Bus Owners Association had earlier on cautioned that it would resort to a strike if authorities fail to execute the annual bus fare revisions as stipulated.


The Directors board of the LPBOA however convened this morning & is expected to host a media briefing later this afternoon.
