President Mahinda Rajapaksa said that it is the responsibility of the government to ensure the safety of fishermen as they venture to sea.

He also emphasized that the duty of boat owners is to follow government regulations including the grant of insurance cover and safety equipment to fishermen.

The President handed over relief allowances to family members of the fishermen who perished in the windstorms that lashed the sea off the Southern coast last June.

An allowance of 100 thousand rupees was given to each affected fisher family by the President to enable these families to start some income venture.
