The Ministry of Health has uncovered a racket in Kosgama where sedatives have been mixed into alcohol.

On the 19th of this month a suspect was arrested with 200,000 sleeping tablets in his possession.

A subsequent investigation ordered by Minister of Health Maithreepala Sirisena has revealed that the sedatives were diluted in alcohol in order to induce a higher intoxication level.

The sedatives had been mixed into toddy by a relative of the suspect.

The toddy sold at this outlet is said to have had a very high demand due to its increased intoxication level.

A whole sale pharmaceutical distributor in the Colombo District had later on been traced for having provided the suspect with the consignment of sedatives.

The license of the distributor has been revoked while a court case has also been initiated against him based on the directives of the Ministry of Health.
