Police took a man into custody when he was preparing to walk in an undergarment in Deraniyagala town this morning in order to fulfill a bet he lost after former UNP MP Dayasiri Jayasekera defected yesterday.

UNP Sabaragamuwa PC member Ranjith Polgampola told our news team that the person who lost the bet was 43-year-old Shantha Tilakaratna alias “Yoghurt Shantha” of Iluktenna in Deraniyagala.

Tilakaratna had betted one of his neighbors that he would walk in his under garment from Deraniyagala town to the nearby junction if former MP Dayasiri Jayasekera quit the UNP.

The neighbor had asked Tilakaratna to keep his promise after Jayasekera quit his party yesterday.

The loser had prepared to fulfill his bet at Deraniyagla town this morning on the advice of a lawyer.

Deraniyagala police stopped Tilakaratna of his action this morning and took him to police station.

A spokesman for the Deraniyagala police said that they took several statements from the man with regard to his action.

Bet loser Shantha Tilakaratna later expressed his views to our news team.

Views on the Dayasiri Jayasekera’s joining the SLFP were expressed during a UNP media conference held this morning.

Addressing journalists, UNP MP John Amaratunga said that the former MP had decided to quit the UNP several years ago.
