Relief committee on death sentence

The attention of the Ministry of Justice has been drawn towards appointing a committee to provide some form of relief to prisoners who have either been sentenced to death or to life in prison.


There are around 350 prisoners who have been sentenced to death and currently held in prison.


The decision to appoint a committee was taken following a report that was submitted by the Ministry of Prison Reforms to the Ministry of Justice.


Minister of Rehabilitation and Prison Reforms Chandrasiri Gajadheera stated that the final report prepared by the Ministry of Justice will be forwarded to teh President.
