African cat fish to Sri lanka.

Environmental organisations accuse that the aquatic development authority has given the green light to a private company to import the African cat fish to Sri lanka.

Environmentalist Jagath Gunawardana states that approval is granted for the relevant company to farm the catfish and export.

Gunawardana states that there is a possibility of African cat fish feeding on our aquatic organisms, specially the endemic and endangered species of fish and aquatic organisms.

The other disturbing aspect of this fish is that it has an auxiliary air breathing apparatus.

Our news team inquired about this from the Director of the Sri Lanka National Aquatic development authority Jayantha Chandrasoma.

He stated that although a private company in Chilaw has requested to import the African cat fish, so far permission has not been granted.
