Kelaniya prepared for Mervin's referendum

11 UPFA members of the Kelaniya Pradeshiya Sabha including its Chairman Prasanna Ranaweera said that they were ready to face the leadership ballot proposed by Minister Mervyn Silva last Monday.


Addressing a ceremony held at the Helena Wijewardana Primary Girls School in Kelaniya on August 5th, Minister Silva proposed to hold a ballot to check the voters’ consent, whether they want the Minister to function as the SLFP Chief Organizer for Kelaniya.




Addressing a media briefing convened at the Kelaniya PS Office today to reply to Minister Silva, its Chairman Prasanna Ranaweera had this to say.




Minister Mervyn Silva withdrew as SLFP Chief Organizer for Kelaniya after the murder of Kelaniya PS member Hasitha Madawala.


Later Western Province Chief Minister Prasanna Ranatunga took over the position.


Meanwhile, a van illegally transporting 12 heads of cattle had been brought to the Wattala – Hunupitiya ground after one of its wheels had developed a mechanical failure.


After the residents of the region had learned of this the suspects had fled the area.


Subsequently the residents of the region had notified Minister of Public Relations and Public Activities Mervin Silva, the chairman of the Kelaniya Pradeshiya Sabha Prasanna Ranaweera and the police regarding the incident.

Minister Mervin Silva who arrived after the departure of the Chairman of the Kelaniya Pradeshiya Sabha stated that he had taken steps to eradicate cattle slaughter in Kelaniya.
