President Mahinda Rajapaksa took action yesterday to solve the water problem at Rathupas-wala in Waeliweriya.

That was after a discussion held under the patronage of the President between residents and representatives of the factory alleged to have led to the pollution of the water in the area’s wells.

On this occasion the President had put forward several solutions to the problem.

The first matter stressed at the discussion was that providing safe potable water to the people of the area should be the top priority of the relevant officers.

While the Government Analyst’s Department is scheduled to test the water and release a report, if it is confirmed by the report that the factory had acted wrongfully, the factory would be closed.

Similarly if it is revealed by the report that the factory had acted according to relevant regulations, a reasonable time period is scheduled to be given for re-establishing the factory within the BOI zone.

Moreover the President’s Media Unit said that residents expressed their agreement to allow the use of the products produced before the stopping of the relevant factory operations, and to allow the factory to continue to function till the Analyst’s Department report is released.

On this occasion President Mahinda Rajapaksa requested the people to refrain from taking the law into their hands when problems arose based on issues like this.

Similarly the President also stated on this occasion that to prevent similar problems occurring once again, all new factories set up in the country should be set up within the BOI Zone.
