The Colombo Police Crime Division informed Court today that the army was summoned by the Gampaha SP to control the Weliweriya incident.

When the case was taken for hearing today, Gampaha Chief Magistrate Tikiri Jayatilaka ordered the Attorney General to appoint a state counsel to assist the Police.

3 persons were killed when the army opened fire to control a protest which demanded drinking water at Weliweriya on August 1st.

Appearing on behalf of the affected residents, President of the Bar Association Upul Jayasuriya requested the court to prevent the soldiers involved in the Weliweriya incident from leaving the country.

In response to the Bar Association President’s request, the Chief Magistrate said that he cannot give such an order as the soldiers were not entered in the suspects’ name list.

The Colombo Crimes Division informed courts that the Sister of the Weliweriya St Anthony’s Church will be called before courts for the next hearing on the 6th of September to ascertain if there were any threats to her life.
