Amnesty to register tamed elephants.

The Ministry of Wild Life Resources and Conservation has decided to grant an amnesty period to enable those who keep tamed elephants illegally to register them.


On an earlier occasion, Our news team exposed that certain individuals had removed some elephant cubs and keeping them in their private possession illegally.


Addressing a media conference held in Colombo this morning, Line Minister Vijith Vijithamuni Soyza said that the government will charge one million rupees per elephant to register them.




A question was raised during the media briefing about the lost elephant registration book which was exposed by our news team on an earlier occasion as it has not been retrieved yet.


Referring to the lost elephant book, the Minister said the report by the Committee appointed to look into the theft is scheduled to release on the 29th of this month.
