Minister Lakshmna yapa issues a challenge regarding casinos.

Investment Promotion Minister Lakshman Yapa Abeywardana asked to prove if any Casino or any other gaming licenses were given under this government.


He made this statement while expressing his views about giving Cabinet approval to 2 mixed projects with Casino, gaming and betting facilities.


Among one of the projects that Minister Abeywardana sought Cabinet approval is a 650 million US dollars investment to put up a luxury hotel complex with gaming and betting facilities.


The other 350 million US dollars project is Lake Leisure Holdings Company which belongs to Australian Casino tycoon James Packer.


Packer’s hotel complex is also included gaming and betting facilities and will be constructed in D.R. Wijewardene Mawatha.


Journalists questioned about these news projects during the media briefing to inform the Cabinet decisions held in Colombo yesterday.


Answering the media, Minister Keheliya Rambukwella said that new licenses have not been issued for Casino projects.




During a media briefing held in Colombo yesterday UNP MP Dr. Harsha de Silva said that none of the Casino operators in the country has licenses.




Minister Lakshman Yapa Abeywardana also said that no new Casino licenses have been issued.




Meanwhile, during the Hela Urumaya National Convention held on the 13th of this month, Minister Patalee Champika Ranawaka expressed his views about Casino.
