The UNP has sent Election Commissioner a letter asking an inquiry to the marked ballot papers found yesterday at the St. Andres College in Puttalam.

In his letter to the Commissioner, UNP General Secretary MP Tissa Attanayake urged him to suspend the gazette to be declared on the Puttalam district election results and preferential votes until the report of this inquiry is released.

JVP Puttalam District group leader Samantha Korale Arachchi also issued a media release with regard to the abandoned marked ballot paper incident.

He stated in his communiqué that the Election Commissioner should intervene into this incident and find an immediate solution.

The Puttalam Police today produced the 2 bags of marked ballot papers which were abandoned at the St. Andrews College before Puttalam District Judge Ranga Dissanayake.

Later the District Judge ordered the authorities to investigate the incident and submit him a report on 9th of November.

Meanwhile the fasting started by 15 Puttalam district candidates demanding the Election Commissioner to annul the results and call for fresh polls was called off this afternoon.

Several candidates of the UPFA, UNP, JHU, SLMC, Janasetha Peramuna and Democratic Party participated in the fasting.

Speaking on the incident Election Commissioner Mahinda Deshapriya told a media briefing today that he is ready to appear before any court regarding the incident.

He also said that he would call for fresh election only if he gets a respective Court order.
