India endorses Navi Pillay s statement regarding Sri lanka.

India making a statement at the 24th session of the Human Rights Council, said that it encourages the UN Human Rights Commissioner to “continue to provide advice and technical assistance to Sri Lanka in accordance with” the Council’s resolutions.


The statement was made in reference to the ‘oral update by the High Commissioner for Human Rights on promoting reconciliation and accountability in Sri Lanka’.


The statement said India take note that the High Commissioner had welcomed the government’s acceptance of 53 additional LLRC recommendations and had highlighted the need for implementation of the remaining recommendations contained in the LLRC report for concrete improvement in Human Rights.


India said the Sri Lankan government has honoured its commitment to the international community to hold elections to the Northern Provincial Council and similarly they expect the government to implement the other important commitments made to the international community, including the full implementation of the 13th Amendment to the Sri Lanka Constitution and going beyond it.


Meanwhile, Secretary of the JHU Minister Patali Champika Ranawaka and former permanent representative to the UN Dr Dayan Jayathilaka expressed their views regarding United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights Navi Pillays oral update.
