Operation underway to douse fires in 4 forest reserves

Due to the prevailing dry weather conditions fires erupted in several areas in the island today.


Over 15 acres of land was destroyed in a fire that erupted in the Somawathiya National park this afternoon.


Police stated that the reason for the fire has not yet been revealed.


Our reporter stated that the Army and Police are engaged in efforts to douse the fire.


Meanwhile, the Disaster Management Centre stated that 15 acres were destroyed in the upper reserve in Kotmale.


Another fire that erupted near the Wellawaya reserve destroyed 15 acres of land while the fire has been doused by now.


Meanwhile, the Disaster Management Centre stated that almost 10 acres have been destroyed in a fire that erupted in the Kappalthurai reserve in Trincomalee.


The Nuwara-eliya District Secretary D P G Kumarasiri meanwhile, requests the general public to be aware of those responsible for triggering such fires.
