NEW UPDATE : Maithree Gunarathne s father who shot at UNP supporters arrested

 Subsequently the father of Southern Provincial Councillor Maithree Gunarathne, Herman Gunarathne was arrested by the Matara Police in connection with the shooting. 

Subsequently UNP MP Mangala Samaraweera was also seen at the Matara police inquiring into the incident.

Meanwhile, the foot procession was concluded at Kamburugamuwa and speaking at a press conference held today the head of the UNP communication arm MP Mangala Samaraweera stated that armed group of individuals were also part of the procession.

However, at the conclusion of the procession provincial councillor Maithree Gunarathne addressed the gathered.

He stated that there were attempts to hit them with various items but that they did not back down. He also went on to say that Mangala Samaraweera tried to stop their journey by bringing Krishantha Pushpakumara who is part of Ranil’s UNP, to help disrupt the procession.

Meanwhile, MP Mangala Samaraweera stated that it is Kiliraja Mahendran alias Maharaja who accepts the government contract to sabotage UNP campaigns during every election, and that this time, he had recruited Maithree Gunaratna and Shiran Lakthilaka to his cause.

He concluded that, that was why they are requesting UNP supporters to open their eyes and indentify the conspiracy against the UNP.

Meanwhile, the Matara Magistrate’s Court ordered the police to disperse the procession after taking into consideration the report issued by the police to the court.

UNP supporters disrupt foot procession against Ranil

A tense situation arose after a group of UNP supporters disrupted a foot procession against opposition leader Ranil Wickramasinghe which began near the Devinuwara Wishnu Devalaya.


Our regional correspondent stated that a clash occurred between the two groups and following the conclusion of the clash the foot procession continued.


UNP executive committee member Lasantha Gunawardena stated that the protest was a peaceful one against creating a division within the UNP and the destruction of the party and that a group of drunk individuals had arrived and proceeded to assault the protestors.


Meanwhile, our regional correspondent reported that the foot procession has neared the Matara town and that another tense situation has arisen as a result of another group of UNP supporters attempting to disrupt the procession.
