UNP General Secretary MP Tissa Attanayake described the four major tasks that has cast on the proposed new Party Restructuring Board.


During a media briefing held at the UNP Headquarters in Pitakotte this morning, he said the Central Working Committee decided yesterday to empower the Party Restructuring Board in order to take the party into a middle path.


Meanwhile Tissa Attanayake also expressed his views on the statement made by Opposition Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe during the yesterday’s Central Working Committee meeting.

UNP appoints a new board - A meeting between Ranil, Sajith and Karu.

It was decided at the UNP working committee meeting held yesterday to appoint a new board to carry out future actions.


This meeting which began at 4.45 p.m. yesterday with party leader Ranil Wickremasinghe at the chair went on till 9.00 last night.


While it was decided at this meeting to appoint a board for the party’s future actions and victory it was proposed for this board to act on the concept of a supreme council.


The UNP general secretary said that meanwhile Opposition Leader Ranil Wickremasinghe, MPs Sajith Premadasa and Karu Jaysuriya would meet this week to discuss about the party’s future activities.


Meanwhile party chairman Gamini Jayawikrema Perera and National Organiser Dayaa Gamage informed the working committee yesterday that they were prepared to step down from their posts.


However party general secretary Thissa Attanayake said that discussion had not been held at the meeting with regard to the incident that took place in Matara recently.


A satyagraha campaign was held in front of party headquarters before the working committee began yesterday.


On this occasion the campaigners declared that speedy action should be taken against those who damage party discipline.


The campaigners decided to give up the satyagraha after party general secretary Thissa Attanayake went before the campaigners after the working committee meeting and informed them about the decisions taken at the working committee meeting.

The UNP Working Committee meeting was presided by Opposition Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe this afternoon.


Party sources said that a tense situation will be expected in today’s meeting as it is taking place just after the Provincial Council elections.


Heated arguments have already been passed among the participating members and many participants have exchanged views about the party restructure means.


However a fast was started in front of the party headquarters before the working committee began today.


Some members of the United Bhikku Front and others of the National Youth Front who participated in the fast demanded that the members who violate  party discipline should be sacked.
