Just after taking oaths as the Northern Provincial Council Chief Minister C.V. Wigneswaran said that he would be able to work in harmony with the government in functioning the Northern Provincial Council.


C.V. Wigneswaran was sworn in as the first Chief Minister of the Northern Provincial Council before President Mahinda Rajapaksa at Temple Trees this morning.


After the sworn-in ceremony, the President offered a statue of god Ganapathi to the Northern Provincial Chief Minister.


All religious dignitaries including the Maha Sangha, Prime Minister D.M. Jayarathna, several government Ministers and UNP MP John Amaratunga attended the ceremony.


All TNA coalition leaders had been invited to the sworn-in ceremony but only TNA leader R. Sampandan, MPs M.A. Sumandiran, Appaturai Vinayagamurthi and PLOT leader Dharmaligam Siddarthan participated.


Meanwhile sources said that TULF Leader Ananda Sangaree who lost a seat in the Northern Provincial Council in the recently concluded election had not been invited to the ceremony.


Speaking at the media briefing, TNA leader R. Sampandan said that it is necessary to devolve power within a unitary state.


A former diplomat and political analyst Dr. Dayan Jayatilaka was also present at the sworn-in ceremony.


He told the media that both parties should now work to propel the North Provincial Council towards the correct direction.
