A complicated situation with regard to the appointment of an Opposition Leader erupted when the 2nd session of the Central Provincial Council commenced today.

The CP came across this crisis after a group of UNP members proposed fellow member Lucky Jayawardana’s name to the Opposition Leader’s position.

Earlier, UNP General Secretary had informed the UNPers that Councilor Ranjith Aluvihare should be made Opposition Leader of the Central Provincial Council.

Later appointments were made to several other positions of the CP.

Accordingly, A. Madiyugarajah was appointed as leader of the house while Anuradha Jayarathna was appointed as government organizer.

Meanwhile CP Chairman Mahinda Abeykoon said that he received a letter with 12 signatures proposing the name of Lucky Jayawardana as Opposition Leader.

However CP Chairman Mahinda Abeykoon postponed the announcement of the Opposition Leader’s position to future sessions.

After the CP session today, Lucy Jayawardana told our news team that the letter asking the CP to appoint him to Opposition Leader position has already been submitted to the party General Secretary.

There are 16 UNP members sitting in the Central Provincial Council.

However Ranjith Aluvihare told our news team that the party has already appointed him to the position of Opposition Leader, and he is confident to hold the position in the future as well.
