UPDATE :Video:54 suspects of the Mathara incident granted bail.

The 54 suspects remanded in connection with the recent clash between 2 UNP factions in Matara were released on bail today.

Matara Magistrate Ruwan Sisira Kumara ordered the release on personal bails of 100,000 rupees each.

Opposition Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe’s Private Secretary Sudath Chandrasekera is also among these released suspects.

However 4 more suspects in connection with the Matara clash surrendered to the Courts today as well and the Magistrate ordered that they be produced at an identification parade tomorrow.

Attorney-at-law Nanayakkara said however that Herman Gunarathne, a suspect in the Matara clash and father of Southern Provincial Councilor Maithree Gunarathne was not produced before the Court today as well.

Mathara police arrested another 4 suspects in connection to the clash between UNP supporters that occurred on the 5th of October.


Police stated that the suspects will be produced before the Mathara Magistrate court tomorrow.


According to sources opposition leader of the Waligama Pradeshiya Saba is also among the arrested.
