The Supreme Court rejected today a petition by 2 international organizations to intervene in the special appeal with regard to the impeachment of former CJ Dr. Shirani Bandaranayake.

The Commonwealth Law Association and the Wales Human Rights Committee of England had submitted the petition to the Supreme Court.

The petition was considered by Supreme Court Judges Saleem Mashuk, Chandra Ekanayake, Sathya Hettige, Eva Wanasundera and Rohini Marasinghe.

Earlier the Appeal Court issued an injunction on the decision made by the Parliament Select Committee with regard to the impeachment against the former CJ.

Later the Attorney General filed a special appeal requesting the Supreme Court to declare the Appeal Court injunction null and void.

The Commonwealth Law Association and the Wales Human Rights Committee of England had sought the Supreme Court’s permission to intervene in the special appeal by the Attorney General.

However the Attorney General convinced the bench of 5 Supreme Court judges today that international organizations have no legitimate affiliation to intervene in the special appeal that challenges the injunction on Parliament Select Committee decisions.

Rejecting the petition, the bench of Supreme Court Judges said that international organizations need not to intervene in an internal judicial matter being heard in the Supreme Court.
