The fishing community including fishing trade unions objected Fisheries Minister Rajitha Senarathna’s proposal to impose penalty on the fishermen who violate international maritime boundaries.

Addressing a media briefing in Colombo yesterday, Minister Senarathna said that he has decided to impose a penalty for 1.5 million rupees per fishing trawler that violates international maritime boundary.

A new Act has also been passed in parliament on the 5th of this month to give legal teeth to this decision.

The fishing community and the fishing trade unions claim that what the Minister should do instead is to impose this penalty on the Indian fishermen who intrude into our waters and poach our harvest.

Fishing Trade Unions also object the Minister’s new penalty.

The Expenditure heads of the Fisheries Ministry will be taken for debate in parliament today.

Meanwhile fisheries community staged a protest in Galle town today.

The protesters said that the concessions for fishermen have been axed by the budget of 2014.
