A 15 rupee increase in tax on imported potatoes

The tax the Government has imposed on imported potatoes has been increased up to 40 Rupees per kilo.

The Hector Kobbekaduwa Agrarian and Research Institute said that this had been done for the uplift of the local potato farmer.

Accordingly the tax on imported potato per kilo which was 25 rupees up to now has been increased by 15.

By now potatoes cultivated locally at the Maha Season keeps coming into the market.

They are now sold at a price between Rs 80 to 100.

However imported potato was sold between Rs. 60 and 80.

The Government hopes to maintain an equal price for both local and imported potatoes.
