French bulldogs close in on Labradors as most popular US dog

French bulldogs are one step closer to becoming top dog in the US puppy popularity contest.

In 2020, the small, flat-faced companions overtook the beloved golden retriever and German shepherds on the American Kennel Club's annual ranking.

They are now second, behind Labrador retrievers, which have remained in the top spot for 30 consecutive years. Labradors were America's most popular pure breds in 2020 for the 30th consecutive year, based on registrations.

However, French bulldogs are on track to end labrador retrievers' three-decade reign as top dog in the United States, according to the  American Kennel Club.

The cute canines with their bat-like ears bumped German shepherds from second a position they had held since 2009 to third spot. Frenchies also overtook golden retrievers.

"The playful, adaptable Frenchie has become increasingly popular over the past decade and shows no signs of slowing down," executive secretary Gina DiNardo said in a press release.

The popularity of French bulldogs, which are typically just 12 inches (30 centimeters) tall and weigh under 28 lbs (12 kg), have soared in part because of celebrity ownership.

Last month, Lady Gaga's two Frenchies were stolen at gunpoint in Los Angeles before being found after she offered $500,000 for their safe return.

When Labrador retrievers first topped the chart in 1991, French bulldogs ranked a distant 82nd. But Frenchies began to rise in the rankings in the late ’90s, hitting No. 4 by 2017.

Celebrity owners from Martha Stewart to Lady Gaga to Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson have given the breed exposure. And its compact size, moderate exercise needs, no-fuss coat and rather comic demeanor struck a chord with many dog seekers.

“They are snoring, farting little love machines,” says Nicole Denny, a professional dog handler who has been breeding French bulldogs for 15 years after 20 years with Doberman pinschers.

“They’re not the type of dog to go hiking with you,” AKC spokesperson Brandi Hunter says, “but if you want a dog that’s going to snuggle up with you, be cute, be adaptable, minimal grooming... that’s the kind of breed for you.”

Animal-rights advocates complain that interest in purebred dogs fuels puppy mills and leaves other dogs stuck in shelters.
