Ricky Ponting enters nation coaching set-up

Former Australian captain Ricky Ponting is about to take the next step in the planned move to have him in charge of the national Twenty20 side in time for the next World Cup.

Accordingly, Ponting has been named as head coach Darren Lehmann’s assistant for the upcoming T20 series against England and New Zealand next month.

Troy Cooley and Matthew Mott will also join the coaching staff.

Regular support staff Graeme Hick (batting coach), David Saker (bowling) and Brad Haddin (wicketkeeping/fielding) will be in South Africa on a recon mission ahead of Australia’s 4-match Test tour that starts on March 1.

It’s not the first time he’s been brought in the fold, either, having been brought in — along with fellow Test fast bowler Jason Gillespie — as assistants to interim coach Justin Langer for a home T20 series against Sri Lanka, which took place while Lehmann and the Test team were in India for a four-Test series.

Australia’s all-time leading run-scorer, with 13,378, and century-maker, with 41, Ponting is considered one of the finest cricket brains in the country and has been in demand for some time.

“Ricky has a fantastic cricket brain and when it comes to Twenty20 cricket there aren’t many better in the world given his experience around the world, as a player, a coach and a commentator,” said Lehmann.
