Ranil Wickremesinghe who led the UNP for 26 years has decided to step down from the post.

The decision has been taken after a meeting with party stalwarts held at the UNP headquarters – Sirikotha today.

Ravi Karunanayake, Daya Gamage, Akila Viraj & Vajira Abeywardena have been nominated for the post of UNP leader according to Akila Viraj Kariyawasam - UNP General Secretary.

The final decision is to be taken in consultation in the coming week.

The UNP was founded in 1946 and, Ranil Wickramasingha was appointed its leader on November 12, 1994.

Thereafter the party was able to come to power only on two occasions.

UNP, under the leadership of Ranil was defeated in the General elections in 1994 and the year 2000.

It formed a government with a majority obtained in the election held in 2001.

But his government lost power after 2 years and was defeated again in the General Election held in 2004.

The UNP, under the leadership of Ranil Wickremesinghe was defeated in the Presidential Elections in 2005, 2010 and as well as in 2020.

His party lost the General elections in 2010 as well as 2020.

In addition, in all the provincial council and local government elections held from 2004 to 2014, they were defeated when he was the leader of the UNP.

However, the UNP won the 2015 Presidential election and the subsequent General Election and ruled the country with the support of minority parties for 4 and a half year.

In this backdrop, the UNP sustained a humiliating defeat in last Wednesday’s General Election.

Later, various factions of the party blamed the leadership for its historical defeat.

However, Ranil Wickremesinghe decided to step down from the party leadership during a meeting held at the party headquarters – Sirikotha today.
