Former IGP Pujith Jayasundara says that the main reason for the Easter attack was the clear breakdown of the existing system.

He stated this while giving evidence before the Presidential Commission of Inquiry probing into the Easter attack.

Former IGP Pujith Jayasundara was summoned today (13th) to give evidence before the Presidential Commission of Inquiry probing into the Easter attack.

Legal counsel representing other stakeholders had the opportunity today to cross-examine the evidence given to the Presidential Commission so far.

President's Counsel Anil Silva - On behalf of former President Maithripala Sirisena - "You didn't care because this was information received from a foreign country, didn't you?"

Former IGP - Pujith Jayasundara - "No, sir, I refuse to accept it, but our intelligence services could not find this information until a foreign country told them."

President's Counsel Anil Silva - On behalf of former President Maithripala Sirisena - "You were of the opinion that it was okay for the churches to get attacked, weren't you?"

Former IGP - Pujith Jayasundara - "It's the same as before. I refuse to accept it."

President's Counsel Anil Silva - On behalf of former President Maithripala Sirisena - "I have to suggest, either by spinning or straightening, that's what happened? So why did you not inform the President of this information?"

Former IGP - Pujith Jayasundara - "That is the responsibility of Director of State Intelligence Nilantha Jayawardena."

Thereafter, the lawyer representing former Director of the State Intelligence Senior DIG Nilantha Jayawardena had the opportunity to cross-examine Pujith Jayasundara.

Attorney-at-Law Madhu Jayathilaka - On behalf of Nilantha Jayawardena, former Director of the State Intelligence Service - "Let us focus on the intelligence received on April 4. Are you saying that you did not receive it on April 9 until you received it from Mr. Sisira Mendis? But before that Mr. Nilantha Jayawardena informed you about this over the phone, didn't he?"

Former IGP - Pujith Jayasundara - " He spoke but did not inform. Nilantha Jayawardena had recorded all conversations and given it to the commission. So why cant he hand over to the commission the recorded conversation, where has has informed me.

Attorney-at-Law Madhu Jayatilake - On behalf of former Director of the State Intelligence Service Nilantha Jayawardena - "Even though you were not summoned to the Security Council, Nilantha Jayawardena sent you all the reports on April 18, 19, 20 until the Easter attack, didn't he?"

Former IGP - Pujith Jayasundara - "I accept that, but there was no specific information in those documents."

Attorney-at-Law Madhu Jayatilake - On behalf of the former Director of the State Intelligence Service Nilantha Jayawardena - "I suggest that you used the post of IGP to build your personal image and not to maintain law and order."

Former IGP - Pujith Jayasundara - "I also refuse to accept that. If I had used the post of IGP like that, this would not have happened to me today. I am not someone who came through the back door.

Whatever fate befalls me, I have to say I did the best I could. The Easter attack was a failure of a collective effort. It was a systemic failure"
