A consumer can claim a kilo of sugar at Rs. 85 at Lanka Sathosa outlets only after buying other goods worth more than Rs. 600, says minister Bandula Gunawardena.

Speaking to Hiru News, he said this measure was taken to prevent the use of sugar in the making of illicit liquor.

Consumers have complained that certain Lanka Sathosa outlets sell sugar at high prices.

The government has set the prices of canned salmon and big-onions at Rs. 200 and Rs. 100 per kilo respectively and removed the import levy on dhal.
