The Secretary of State of the United States of America, Michael R. Pompeo will undertake an Official visit to Sri Lanka from 27 to 28 October 2020, on an invitation extended by his Sri Lankan counterpart, Foreign Minister Dinesh Gunawardena.

During his visit, Mr. Pompeo will hold official discussions with the Lankan leadership as well as with his counterpart. The discussions during the visit will cover several areas of the multifaceted engagement between the two countries. 

The visiting US Secretary of State will meet with the President and the Prime Minister.

Highest-level US dignitary to visit Sri Lanka
Secretary of State Pompeo is the highest-level US dignitary to visit Sri Lanka during the tenure of US President Donald Trump.

Meanwhile, the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) states that the government should state whether the US Air Force plane carrying US security forces, journalists and hosts for the US Secretary of State's visit to Sri Lanka arrived in Sri Lanka correctly under quarantine rules.

Mike Pompeo to sign SOFA and MCC? - SJB
Speaking at a press conference today, Samagi Janabalawegaya MP Patali Champika Ranawaka stated that the US Secretary of State will be in Sri Lanka to sign the 'status of forces agreement' (SOFA) and the Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC) agreement.

However, the Minister of Education, Prof. G.L. Peiris told at a news conference in Colombo that US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo would not be in Sri Lanka to sign any special agreements.

Meanwhile, the Communist Party of Sri Lanka issued a statement stating that while maintaining bilateral relations with the United States, Sri Lanka must also achieve strong economic development with emerging Asia.

Mike Pompeo arrives in India

US secretary of state Mike Pompeo and defence secretary Mark T Esper arrived in India today for a dialogue which is aimed at strengthening strategic ties in the face of growing Chinese influence across the region according to Indian media.

The two-day visit comes at a time when India is engaged in a in a bitter border standoff with China, with Pompeo indicating earlier that the dialogue is expected to focus on the "threats posed by Beijing".

According to Indian media reports, bilateral talks between the two countries will focus on the study of missile and terrorist activities, surveillance and the provision of sensitive US space satellite data important to national security.

During his visit, Pompeo will also visit the Maldives and Indonesia.
