France and Germany announce a four week lockdown - will continue until December

Two of Europe's biggest economies France and Germany have announced lockdown measures in response to escalating coronavirus numbers.

French President Emmanuel Macron has announced a second national lockdown according to foreign media. According to the new measures, starting on Friday, people would only be allowed to leave home for essential work or medical reasons.

France will begin a four-week lockdown on Friday and will last until December according to the President. People will need a certificate to move around while non-essential businesses, restaurants and bars will be closed under lockdown measures. Schools and workplaces will remain open, and care homes visits will be allowed.

Meanwhile German Chancellor Angela Merkel also announced a four-week nationwide lockdown starting next Monday. German restaurants, bars and clubs will be closed. German Chancellor said that they have to "act now" as a nation and has called for a "major national effort" to fight the spread of coronavirus

People residing in Germany have been advised to stay home, avoid travel and keep their contacts to an absolute minimum. Social contacts will be limited to two households in public. Schools and kindergartens will remain open, but under strict hygiene measures. Bars will be closed and restaurants will be limited to takeaways.
