Three people, including a woman, have been killed in an attack by a religious extremist near a major Catholic church in Nice, France.
The mayor of Nice called the attack a terrorist attack.
The suspect had strangled the woman and killed the other two with a sharp weapon, according to foreign reports. One elderly victim who had come to pray was "virtually beheaded".
One of the victims was an employee of a Catholic church and the suspect has been arrested by the police.
Two weeks ago, a French teacher, who had recently shown students cartoons of the Prophet Muhammed, was beheaded outside his school.
Police have not suggested a motive for the attack in Nice. However, it follows days of protests in some Muslim-majority countries triggered by President Macron's defence of French cartoons that depict the Prophet Mohammed.
The Prophet Mohammed's birthday falls tomorrow.
The French Council of the Muslim Faith has condemned the knife attack in the city of Nice which left three people dead.
