Total number of COVID patients in Sri Lanka nears 10,000

The total number of coronavirus patients reported from Sri Lanka is currently nearing 10,000 as the number increased to 9,791 with the 586 patients identified yesterday (29).

Among the patients identified yesterday (29), 467 patients were associated with the Peliyagoda fish market and fishing harbours, while another 115 were identified from quarantine centers.

Accordingly, the total number of patients in the Minuwangoda Brandix cluster and Peliyagoda fish market cluster has increased to 6,313 as it expanded across 23 districts.

A Sri Lankan sailor and three Indonesian sailors who returned from overseas were also identified as coronavirus patients yesterday (29).

Another two police officers attached to the Colombo Crime Division was also identified as COVID patients, increasing the number of CCD officers that contracted coronavirus to 15, as per sources. In addition, four more officers who are suspected to be infected with the virus were admitted to the Colombo National Hospital.

A young woman living in Rathgama who was employed at a Brandix apparel factory in Katunayake Export Processing Zone was also identified as a COVID patient.

Meanwhile, 5,630 patients are still receiving treatment for coronavirus infection while 4,142 patients have recovered.

Attention has also been drawn to use the 180-bed Welikada Prison Hospital as a treatment center for COVID patients in case of an emergency and to set up the Angunakolapelessa Prison Hospital and Dumbara Prison Hospital as treatment centers.

Releasing a statement, the Prison Reforms and Prisoners Rehabilitation State Ministry noted that attention has been paid to procure the necessary health staff and equipment in collaboration with the Health Ministry.

Commissioner General of Buddhist Affairs Sunanda Kariyapperuma stated that the number of persons that participate 'Katina pooja' must be limited to 30, while the number of monks that participate in the ceremony must be limited to five. He added that the ‘Katina Chhevaraya’ (robe) should be brought from a short distance to be placed in the temple.
