A disturbance over the southeast Bay of Bengal developed into a low pressure area this morning (21), the Department of Meteorology says.

This low pressure area is expected to intensify further into a depression during the next 24 to 48 hours.

It is likely to move west-northwestwards towards the eastern and northern coasts of the island on 24 November.

On its effect, very heavy rains of more than 150 mm can be expected at some places in the northern, eastern and north central provinces from 23 to 25 of November.

The wind speed can increase to between 40 and 50 kmph at times.

The naval and fishing communities are advised not to venture into the eastern or northern sea areas from tonight.
