Weather update 25 November: Cyclonic Storm “NIVAR” over southwest Bay of Bengal

The cyclone that was developing in the last two days has been named "Nivar". According to the forecasting division of the National Meteorological Centre, the Cyclonic Storm “NIVAR” over southwest Bay of Bengal is intensified into a Severe Cyclonic Storm and located near (10.1N, 82.1E) at 23.30hrs yesterday (24), 230km to the east of Kankasanthurai coast.

It is very likely to intensify into a very Severe Cyclonic Storm and expected to move northwestwards and cross Tamil-Nadu coast, India during next 24hours.

Under the influence of this system, very strong gusty winds (60-80)kmph can be expected in Northern, Eastern and North-Central provinces. Strong gusty winds (40-50)kmph can be expected elsewhere.

Cloudy skies can be expected over Northern, North-Central, North-Western and Western provinces.

Showers or thundershowers will occur at times in Northern and North-Central provinces and Puttalam district. Fairly heavy falls above 75mm are likely at some places.

Showers will occur at several places in Western, Sabaragamuwa and Central provinces and in Kurunegala and Galle districts. Showers or thundershowers may occur at a few places in Uva province after 2.00 p.m.

General public is requested to take adequate precautions to minimize damages caused by strong winds.

The Cyclonic Storm “NIVAR” over southwest Bay of Bengal is intensified into a Severe Cyclonic Storm and located near (10.1N, 82.1E) at 2330hrs yesterday (24), 230km to the east of Kankasanthurai coast. 

As such, intemittent showers/thundershowers, strong or very strong gusty winds and rough or very rough seas can be expected in the sea areas in between 08N-15N, 80E-90E during next few days.

Condition of Rain:
Intemittent showers or thundershowers will occur in the sea areas extending from Puttalam to Pottuvill via Mannar, Kankasanthurai, Trincomalee and Batticaloa.

Winds will be northerly to westerly and wind speed can increase up to (80-100) kmph at times over sea area extending from Puttalam to pottuvil via Mannar, Kankasanthurai, Trincomalee and Batticaloa. Winds will be north-westerly to south-westerly in the other sea areas around the island.

Wind speed can increase up to (50-60) kmph at times over sea area extending from Puttalam to Hambanthota via Colombo. Wind speed will be 30-40 kmph in other sea areas.

State of Sea:
The sea areas extending from Puttalam to Pottuvil via Mannar, Kankasanthurai, Trincomalee and Batticaloa will be very rough or high at times. Naval and fishing communities are advised not to venture these sea areas.

The sea areas extending from Puttalam to Hambanthota via Colombo will be fairly rough at times.

Naval and fishing communities are request to be vigilant in this regard.
