Illegal celebrations not allowed in North - Police

Thursday, 26 November 2020 - 13:26

A group of Tamil party representatives have issued a joint statement requesting that an oil lamp be lit in every house in the Northern Province tomorrow (27) in memory of the Tamil people who have died in the war.

However, Police Media Spokesperson DIG Ajith Rohana stated that there is no opportunity to hold any celebrations in the North and if any celebrations are held, action will be taken to arrest them.

The Jaffna and Mullaitivu Magistrate's Courts issued interim injunctions yesterday (25) preventing the Mahaveer Commemoration celebrations in Jaffna and Mullaitivu. However, the Tamil party representatives held a special discussion in Jaffna yesterday (25), where they stated since the Courts had banned the Mahaviru celebrations, they have extended the request to the people in the Northern Province.

According to the Hiru correspondent, Illankai Tamil Arasu Kachchi Leader Mavai Senathirajah, Suresh Premachandran of E.P.R.L.F., Tamil National Alliance, Secretary M.K. Shivajilingam as well as former Northern Province Council Chairman C.V.K. Sivagnanam had attended the event.

However, Police Media Spokesman DIG Ajith Rohana reiterated that the LTTE is a banned terrorist organization and that opportunity will not be given for any individual or group to celebrate the members of the organization.
