Steps have been taken to provide seeds free of charge for the cultivation of 400 acres of maize in the Hambantota District.

The program was launched over the weekend in the Lower Mattala area under the patronage of Environment Minister Mahinda Amaraweera.

The Minister said that although it was planned to cultivate 200 acres of maize in the Hambantota District, a decision was made to double the quantity at the request of the farming community.

Reportedly, 375 families in the district have been selected for the project and a private company in Anuradhapura has agreed to purchase the entire maize harvest.
