State Minister of Finance Ajith Nivard Cabraal stated that the resumption of vehicle imports will be considered at the end of this year.
The State Minister made this statement while answering a question raised by the Leader of the Opposition Sajith Premadasa in Parliament.
The Minister emphasized that the government has stopped the importation of vehicles as a temporary measure.
The Minister said that the import of vehicles will have a greater impact on the stability of foreign exchange rates.
He further stated that the Export Controller had instructed to release vehicles arriving at the ports on several occasions to provide relief to vehicle importers.
State Minister Ajith Cabraal further stated that the temporary ban on the import of non-essential goods including vehicles will be decided on the basis of the stability of the exchange rate in the future.
Meanwhile, the State Minister Ajith Nivard Cabraal stated that the Central Bank has printed currency to the value of Rs. 48 billion.
Speaking to the Hiru news team, he said that the steps were taken to maintain financial liquidity.
The Minister emphasized that if such a step was not taken in the current situation the contraction of the economy could not be prevented
