The authorities have paid attention to this issue today.
The government issued a special gazette notification on March 12 last year fixing the maximum retail price for chicken.
It stated that 1 kg of chicken with skin should be sold for Rs. 430 and 1 kg of skinless chicken should be sold for Rs. 500.
But the price of chicken in the market continued to increase and last week it had increased to Rs.700.
Poultry traders in the Colombo area had recently taken steps to withdraw from the trade due to the price crisis.
A special discussion with poultry sellers was held today at the Ministry of Cooperative Services, Marketing Development and Consumer Protection with the aim of providing relief to consumers during the festive season.
Poultry producers were also present at the discussion.
The companies today agreed to sell chicken at Rs. 430 per kilo.
