Police officer assaulted for requesting to wear the seat belt

The Police Media Unit states that a police officer who was on duty at the 'Kurundugaha Hathapma' interchange of the Southern Expressway has been assaulted by an unruly driver.

The police officer has warned the driver regarding the need to wear the seat belt last evening as the person was not wearing the seat belt. 

The driver who got angry as a result has got into an argument with the police officer.

Subsequently he has assaulted the police officer. The driver has been immediately arrested.

He is due to be produced before the Elpitiya Magistrate today.

Police Media Spokesman DIG Ajith Rohana says that police officers are on duty day and night for the safety of the entire public.

Therefore, he requested drivers to accept their mistakes pointed out for their own safety in an environment where more than 3000 people die due to road accidents annually.

It has been reported that during the last three months 14 police officers on duty had been killed in road accidents while 580 deaths were reported due to accidents in the three months in 2021.

He added that argument with the law enforcement officers is not only challenging the police or the officer concerned but the rule of law as a whole.
