Based on Leigh Bardugo’s best-selling Grishaverse books, Shadow and Bone follows Sun Summoner Alina Starkov (Jessie Mei Li) in the war torn country of Ravka, after mysterious General Kirigan (Ben Barnes) plucks her from the ranks of the non-magical army and brings her to train. Along the way, she learns more about her own powers and the actual secrets behind the tangible swath of darkness that splits the country in two.
The first season, which premiered on April 23, adapted the events of the first book in Bardugo’s main trilogy. But honestly, the show did the story better, in my professional opinion, elevating the simple Chosen One storyline into something more.
The second season will likely follow the events of the second book in the main trilogy, Siege and Storm. It kicks off with Alina and Mal (Archie Renaux) on a boat, captained by dashing privateer Sturmhond (not a huge spoiler, but my ultimate favorite character across all three Grishaverse serieses). Like the first season of the show, this second one is expected to integrate new stories featuring the Six of Crows characters (Kaz, Inej, Jesper, Nina, and Matthias), who do not canonically appear in the main trilogy, but are so dang popular that the showrunner made it work.
