Thursday, 22 July 2021 - 12:45

Milk powder importers have stated that the lack of foreign reserves in the country and several other issues have led to the limitation in the importation of milk powder.

Accordingly, milk powder companies stated that the importation of milk powder has been reduced by 70%.

The daily consumption of milk powder stands at 20 tonnes, while nearly 6,500 to 8,000 tonnes are consumed in a month.

Milk powder importers have requested the Government to increase the price of milk powder on several occasions due to a number of issues including rising milk prices in the world market, rising shipping charges and the appreciation of the dollar.

Milk Powder Importers' Association Member Lakshman Weerasuriya stated that considering the current situation, the importation of milk powder has to be restricted.
