The Transport State Minister had directed a request to the IGP to arrest the bus drivers and conductors who do not adhere to the regulation of carrying passengers according to the number of seats in the vehicle. He had further added to prosecute them under the quarantine law.

This step has been taken following the large number of complaints received to the State Minister regarding the operation of SLTB and privates buses that violate the health guidelines.

Explaining this further, State Minister for Transport Dilum Amunugama said that steps were taken to increase the bus fare by 20% during the beginning of the pandemic so that they can be operated while adhering to health guidelines.

The Minister points out that due to this there is no possibility for motorists and bus owners to transport passengers beyond the number of seats.

He said the police had also been instructed to revoke the licenses of buses operating in violation of quarantine laws.
