Police have arrested 42 protesters who had arrived near the Presidential Secretariat in a motorcade.

It has been reported that 38 persons (25 Male and 13 Female) have been arrested by police for violating quarantine regulations by staging a protest march near the Presidential Secretariat.

Subsequently another 04 persons were arrested by police for violating quarantine regulations by staging a protest march near the Presidential Secretariat

Suspects are to be produced before the courts today according to the Police spokesman.

Police Media Spokesman Senior DIG Ajith Rohana stated that two special police teams were deployed to inform them  not to engage in a protest at a time like this due to the covid surge. 


The protest was staged in front of the Presidential Secretariat.

However, since the protesters did not respond positively to the notice, several other police teams were deployed to arrest them.

Sixteen women and 26 men were among those arrested while the police also seized 10 vehicles.

The Police Media Spokesman stated that statements are being recorded from the arrested persons.

They are then due to be produced in court.

They will be prosecuted on charges of undue obstruction, being a member of an illegal assembly, blocking a main road under the National Highways Act and violating the quarantine rules in force.
