Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan's official residence in Islamabad's Red Zone is now up for rent. A final decision in this regard was taken by the Pakistani Federal Cabinet on Tuesday.

The move is being touted as a measure to shore up funds for the cash-strapped country. In fact, Pakistan's Federal Cabinet has decided to rent out the Prime Minister's official residence for cultural, fashion, educational and other events.

Two committees have been formed to ensure that "discipline and decorum" of the Prime Minister's official residence are not violated during the events, reported Samaa TV.

In August of 2019, Imran Khan's Pakistan-Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) government had announced its plans to convert the Prime Minister's official residence into a state-of-the-art federal educational institution.

The ruling government in Pakistan had also declared that governors would not stay in Governor Houses anymore to break away from colonial tradition and cut down on heavy costs at the same time. The money saved by these measures could instead be used for welfare schemes, the Pakistan government had said.

This was also the same time Pakistan's Prime Minister Imran Khan vacated his official residence in Islamabad and moved to one of his homes in Bani Gala.

Interestingly, the Pakistan Prime Minister's official residence was rented out for the wedding function of Brigadier Waseem Iftikhar Cheema's daughter in 2019. Prime Minister Imran Khan, too, was seen attending the ceremony.

Pakistan's Education Minister Shafqat Mehmood had then reportedly said that it costs Rs 470 million to maintain the Prime Minister's official residence in Islamabad. This is why PM Imran Khan vacated the official residence, Mehmood had claimed.

In September of 2018, the PTI government in Pakistan had garnered Rs 23 lakhs in proceeds after auctioning eight buffaloes maintained by Imran Khan's predecessor Nawaz Sharif at the PM House.

The Pakistan government also auctioned 61 luxury cars earlier this year in an effort to raise money for the country's cash-strapped economy.
