Importers stated that a consignment of sugar worth over Rs. 1 billion, imported five months ago, has been stranded at the port.

Nihal Seneviratne, Vice President of the Sugar Importers' Association, stated that there are more than 7,000 metric tons of sugar in about 300 containers at the port.

The release of this consignment of sugar has been delayed due to having to pay a large amount of late fees.

About five months ago, five importers had imported about 12,000 tons of sugar in 400 containers.

However, due to the policy decision taken by the Government to restrict the import of sugar and the shortage of dollars, the release of this consignment of sugar had been delayed.

After discussions with the Ministry of Trade, the sugar importers agreed to hand over the consignment of sugar to the Sathosa outlet network.

Accordingly, a few weeks ago 5,000 tons of sugar were released.
