Taghi Askari, a 100-year-old Iranian diver, continues to defy age and showcase his passion for diving as he prepares to compete in the World Aquatics Masters Championships. Askari, who won silver and bronze medals at the inaugural Asian Games in 1951, remains committed to the sport that has captivated him since his teenage years.

Standing on the edge of a platform with the water below, Askari's exhibition dive at the 2024 World Championships in Doha served as a testament to his enduring love for diving. As the oldest competitor at the upcoming Masters Championships, Askari embodies the spirit of perseverance and dedication.

Reflecting on his journey in diving, Askari fondly recalls his introduction to the sport near his childhood home in Iran. Inspired by other children somersaulting into the water, he discovered a lifelong passion that led him to win medals at prestigious events like the Asian Games and national championships.

Despite the evolution of diving since his competitive days, Askari's enthusiasm for the sport remains undiminished. He acknowledges the significant changes that have occurred in diving, particularly with the emergence of Chinese swimmers who have raised the bar in the sport. Nevertheless, Askari's commitment to diving has endured, serving as an inspiration to divers of all ages.

The World Aquatics Masters Championships, set to commence shortly after the elite world championships, provides Askari and other participants aged over 25 with a platform to showcase their skills and passion for aquatics. As Askari prepares to dive once again on the global stage, his remarkable journey serves as a reminder of the timeless allure of sport and the boundless spirit of determination.
