Former Minister Gamini Jayawickrama Perera, a prominent figure in Sri Lankan politics and a stalwart of the United National Party, passed away today (17) in the morning after battling serious illness for some time. He was 83 years old.

Hailing from the United National Party, Perera was known for his significant contributions to the political party. Born in 1941, he received his education at Nalanda College, Colombo.

During his political career, Perera served in several ministerial capacities. He held the position of Minister of Irrigation and Water Management from December 2001 to November 2003, and later served as the Minister of Food Security from January 2015 to August 2015.

Additionally, Perera took on the responsibilities of the Minister of Sustainable Development and Wildlife from September 2015 to February 2018, and served as the Minister of "Buddha Sasana" from August 2017 to October 2018.

Following his passing, the body of Gamini Jayawickrama Perera will be placed at his residence in Katugampala, Kurunegala. The family members have indicated that details regarding his funeral arrangements will be communicated in due course.
