Tamayo Perry, an actor known for his role in "Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides," died at age 49 after being attacked by a shark while surfing in Hawaii. The incident occurred on Sunday afternoon, and Honolulu's emergency services confirmed the tragic news during a press conference.

Emergency services responded to a call at Malaekahana Beach around 1:00 PM local time. Despite being brought to shore by jet ski, Perry, who also worked as a lifeguard, was pronounced dead by paramedics.

Perry portrayed one of the buccaneers in the 2011 film "Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides," which starred Johnny Depp, Penelope Cruz, and Geoffrey Rush. He also had roles in "Lost," "Hawaii Five-0," "Blue Crush," and "Charlie's Angels: Full Throttle," and appeared in a Coca-Cola commercial.

Born on the east side of Oahu, Perry had been surfing professionally for over a decade. He was an instructor at Oahu Surfing Experience, where he shared his experiences surfing "the world's deadliest wave." Perry mentioned a near-fatal accident he had experienced years ago due to someone else's "lack of awareness," although he did not elaborate on the details.

Kurt Lager, Acting Honolulu Ocean Safety Chief, praised Perry as "a lifeguard loved by all," known for his infectious personality and his connections on Oahu's north shore and worldwide. He extended condolences to Perry's family, echoing sentiments shared by Mayor Rick Blangiardi. The mayor called Perry's death "a tragic loss" and highlighted his status as a legendary waterman and a respected member of the ocean safety team.

Blangiardi also urged for privacy for Perry's family during this difficult time, acknowledging the unimaginable nature of receiving such a call on a Sunday afternoon.
