The Cabinet of Ministers has granted approval for the Edward Henry Pedris Grounds, a multi-purpose stadium in Colombo, to be utilized by schools lacking playgrounds in the vicinity. The Ministry of Sports has proposed handing over management of the grounds to Isipathana College, Colombo.

Under the proposal, Isipathana College will manage the Edward Henry Pedris Grounds while ensuring it retains its current name and remains accessible to other schools without playgrounds. Schools like St. Paul’s Milagiriya and Lumbini College are among those slated to benefit from this arrangement, utilizing the grounds for sports activities.

The Sports Ministry indicated that the process to transfer management to Isipathana College began in 2016 but faced delays due to incomplete authorization from the Colombo Municipal Council (CMC). With the recent Cabinet approval, the management handover will proceed, subject to specified conditions.

This initiative aims to provide essential sports facilities to schools lacking adequate playgrounds, fostering broader participation in physical activities among students in Colombo.

Back in 2016, an agreement was initially reached allowing Isipathana College to use the stadium for its sports activities. However, this agreement reportedly expired in 2017.

By transferring management to Isipathana College, officials aim to ensure proper maintenance and improvement of the stadium. This initiative is expected to create a conducive space not only for the college's sports activities but also for neighboring schools and local community members.

The Minister of Sports and Youth Affairs proposed the transfer, emphasizing that the stadium will retain its name as the Henry Pedris Stadium.

This development marks a significant step towards utilizing public sports infrastructure effectively for the benefit of educational institutions and the broader community.
