The Supreme Court has mandated that former President Maithripala Sirisena, former Inspector General of Police (IGP) Pujith Jayasundara, and former Chief of State Intelligence Service (SIS) Nilantha Jayawardena finalize their outstanding compensation payments to the victims of the Easter Sunday bomb attacks by August 30, 2024.

Earlier today, Sirisena's legal team informed the court that Rs. 58 million of the total Rs. 100 million in compensation owed by the former President had already been paid. Sirisena's lawyers also requested an extension of six years to complete the remaining payments.

On July 11, 2023, Sirisena paid Rs. 15 million towards his compensation obligation and submitted a motion to pay the remaining amount in 10 instalments of Rs. 8.5 million each from June 30, 2024, to June 20, 2033. However, the Supreme Court has upheld the original deadline, initially set for July 12, 2023, for the completion of these payments.

The seven-member Supreme Court judge panel warned that failure to comply with this deadline would result in contempt of court charges being filed against the individuals by September 20, 2024.
